The Rule of Reason – Going Out On A Limb

The U.S. Congress

The U.S. Congress

Following the rule of reason, I’m going out on a limb with the U.S. Congress and making a prediction. Today, the Senate said it has reached an agreement to fund our government and temporarily raise the debt ceiling. My prediction is John Boehner will bring the Senate’s proposal to the floor of the House. Why? Because this is the best time to do it. Boehner doesn’t want the U.S. to default. He voted against this when Gingrich was Speaker of the House. He doesn’t want to lose his job as Speaker. God help us if he does. What nut case would we get to replace him. He will be able to say to the Tea Party favorites. “I did everything I could.” The Tea Party favorites will be able to say to their constituents. “We did everything we could.” The House will pass the Senate’s recommendation and kick the can down the road until February, because over 117 Republicans will vote for the Senate bill. Everyone will have a Merry Christmas.   Between now and February, the Republican and the Democrats will feign negotiations. One or two very minor changes will be made. Unfortunately, President Obama will not move on a single major point. The same argument will take place in January and we will be right back to where we are now. This could go on indefinitely, until both parties make it an issue in the 2014 Election–A mandate on Obama Care or The Affordable Care Act, whichever you want to call it. By that time, the Two-Party System of Government will be threatened. The Republican party, because of the media coverage, will be on the verge of collapse, and nothing will be change regarding Obama Care. I oppose Obama Care. But I don’t want our government to default and I don’t want our government to close because I oppose it. I’m a longtime Republican and I weep. President Obama is shrewd. The Tea-Party Republicans are deluded by ideology and on a fast-track to destroying our country. Wouldn’t it be better to sit back and watch the Affordable Healthcare Act show its weaknesses. Point out those weaknesses. Then win soundly in 2014 and 2016? What are they thinking. Those are my predictions. God Help Us All.

  1. Science fiction writer Robert Heinlein once said: “Put a hundred dollars into a savings account with three percent interest and leave it for a thousand years. At that time it will be worth nothing.” Because in the end, every economic system collapses.

  2. Speaking as a liberal democrat…good analysis. Obamacare has its faults. But I don’t think it will ever be repealed. But, I think there is plenty to improve. Just don’t want to negotiate those changes under threat. Let them come through normal legislative process.

  3. I think you’ve pretty well nailed it solid on this one. As I mentioned earlier to one of my liberal gal-pals, Rome is burning and we’re all sitting around arguing over who struck the first match! Bleh!
